Product Description
Blockbuster is the ultimate program for aspiriting screenwriters. It was created by Hollywood screenwriting guru John Truby, who has been a story consultant on over 1000 scripts and taught his advanced story structure course to more than 20,000 students worldwide. Truby has consulted for Disney Studios, Sony Pictures, FOX, HBO, Alliance Atlantis, and Cannell Studios in the U.S. and for the BBC, RAI, LUX, TV4, and MTV Sweden in Europe. STEP-BY-STEP TO A GREAT STORY: … More >> John Truby Blockbuster

I have had this program for a week and already I see a major improvement in my sense of story, characters and theme. This is the closest you can get to having a program actually write your script for you. GET IT! And then get optioned.

I had read the books, gone to the classes of well known writers. but I was still lost and without an agent. On a friend’s recommendation I tried John Truby’s story coach program, Blockbuster4.0.
My frst script using Truby’s 22 Building Blocks I became a finalist in contests and now have an agent too. Believe me, if you are serious about your writing this is the best tool out there, period.
Thank you John Truby

I followed the process in John Truby’s Blockbuster software to write two romance novels. Found a publisher for both. Am now on the third book and have ordered the upgrade for Blockbuster.

OK- So, a lot of writers are probably on the fence about buying any kind of software that promises it will make you a better writer, and understandably so. But I personally have found the information contained in Truby’s Blockbuster to be incredibly useful. It is almost like taking a master’s level college course in STORY STRUCTURE & DEVELOPMENT. The software does NOT “write your story for you” or remove the writer from the creative process, it merely helps the writer develop a blueprint or outline for a screenplay that hits all of the important story beats that makes for a compelling story. The “add-ons” for this software provide specific genre guidleines on how to adapt Tuby’s core “22-step” proecss of screenplay/story development to the genre of the story you want to write. The add-ons emphasise “key beats”, help you modify the structure, and pinpoint common weaknesses that writers face when attempting to tackle those genres. The main PROBLEM with this software is that it has a CLUNKY and OUTDATED interface that isn’t intuitive at ALL, and as such I find my only real use for it is as a starting tool- all outlining and script development takes place in other software packages, which is a shame. The best way to look at this software is, as I said, like taking a Master’s level course in story structure & development. I have invested in all of the add-ons for my copy of Blockbuster, and it truly is the first place I go to develop a plot, but I think you will find yourself developing your scenes and stories in better writing and outlining software…
To John Truby: Check out Movie Outline on ideas for updating your interface, or Contour for developing a step by step “timeline” approach for your software.
Cheers.

Why is it that such a smart guy as John Truby refuses to develop his application for Mac? An increasing number of writers around the world now use Macs and when Snow Leopard arrives this application would soar above everything else. As it is Mac users not only have to find the money for the most expensive screenwriting software on the planet but they also have to purchase the square wheeled Windows operating system and put it on their Macs, they also have to pay for Parallels or VM Ware Pro. Mac users are looking at between $200 and $2000 – or thereabouts – for this package, depending on how they kit it out.
Is it worth it? Well no actually. When it fires up in Windows, running in Parallels it still looks as bad as it does on a pure-bred Windows machine. Granted, it runs faster in Boot Camp on a Mac than it does on a comparable Windows machine – but speed is not everything in a writing application. This is an application in dire need of a top to toe overhaul. As it is I won’t be running it and I can see why people are now flocking to Contour.
This reminds me of the behaviour of the folks at Movie Magic Screenwriter – they refused to believe that Montage and CeltX would hurt them. So where are their new customers now? (Wait for the protests and hyperbole.)
So John Truby, do a Mac version and a new Windows Version and make it demand sensitive. If this was half the price you would resist the advancing contenders. It is too expensive for what it does and the benchmarks for this claim are gaining in market share everyday. You have got loyal customers, why lose them? If this was a Mac application I would use it even as it is now with its present amateur and tired interface.
