JIM UHLS Screenwriting Lesson
Posted by adminMay 23
Jim Uhls is not your average screenwriter. For one thing, his nickname is “Professor Peculiar.” For another, as this exclusive off-kilter discussion of his craft demonstrates, Uhls is eager to break the first rule of Fight Club: He talks about Fight Club. A lot. That seminal film, directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Panic Room), pushed every boundary possible for a studio movie, and Uhls’ darkly funny script, adapted from the Chuck Palahniuk novel, is a wickedly subversive example of how to successfully adapt an “unadaptable” book. Step inside the mind of the man who figured out how to do it, as Professor Peculiar explains how to use a newspaper story approach to build a brilliant pitch, why you should interview your characters, how to know when to “stick a fork” in your screenplay, and the macabre particulars of how and why he had to murder his brother’s cat. @novea21 Female screenwriters don’t necessarily lose their hair unless they get too deep into sci-fi. Sadly Leigh Brackett and Ursula K LeGuin both ended up wiggin out
@novea21 Female screenwriters do not necessarily lose their hair unless they realm to deep into trippy weirdo scifi – Leigh Brackett & Ursula K LeGuin were both “wiggin’ out” at the ends of their lives
@OldMcEyeballs HAHAHAHAHAHA!! I was thinking the same about the bald thing..and being a female screenwriter hopeful, that terrifies me!!
This interviewer definitely has his own style.
omg…was this the guy with all the head gear working behind the bar when edward norton is searching for tyler durden?
Not a gasbag. Not at all. Especially like the, “money” remark in the beginning. *applause*. There’s some great advice here- especially inre: not killing your work with an outline and the generous tip-off as to how the main killer in screenwriting isn’t that people don’t FIT THE FORMAT and etc. but how they take their creative work and shoe horn it into an analytical box and kill it. Riffing with your characters? Pissing them off, having a go with them. It’s very good advice. Thanks for it
i laughed then and i laughed now
Thought provking… M.Gibbowr
He wrote Jumper? OMG I had no idea. That’s terrible. I was looking forward to his next project.
looooll…
yes, i fucking hate him. it feels good too
Well go suck his dick and quit responding to shit I wrote 3 months ago.
If you do not know anything about the industry why post comments like that? He has only had 2 produced scripts. Most likely he has 5, 10, or even 20 scripts that he has sold in his career. To get nay produced piece of any caliber is a sign of talent.
Fight Club is a movie before its time.
Jumper is a great concept for a movie. but just like alot of good script get rush into production and put together horribly.
hater
The most valuable thing I’ve learned from watching these clips from TheDialogueSeries is that screenwriting makes you bald. Uhls, Hamburg, Goyer, Haggis, all of ‘em cueballs.
The Haggis interview I think is the most instructive, and the Goyer one is quite good too. This Uhls fellow is a gasbag.
All this guy wrote was Fight Club and Jumper. Wow, is that suppose to be impressive? He’s acting like he’s Alfred Hitchcock. What a douchebag. He looks like he lives on a houseboat.
Dude you forgot the first rule of fight club!!
Shhh..Yeah?
this guy is well up himself, i know he wrote a great screenplay but he should give chuck much more credit than he does
I like this series. I think it has a fantastic set with a great interview.
you should be shot
UM…Money.
Ah, sweet capitalism
if you think fight club sucked than u should probably stop watching movies…. and or not post ever again
cuz no one wants to here your opinion
