How can I determine if I like film directing or film screenwriting?
Posted by adminMay 31
I think I like both but I need to focus on one (career choice).
Any help is appreciated
I should add that I have little experience in both screen writing and directing. BUT I know I want to be involved in creating films and expressing my ideas.

Screenwriting first! Everyone wants to direct.
Actually try something. Even if it’s with a few friends. Your never going to know if you like doing something until you go on try it.
Heck, go write something and make it into a youtube hit. See how you feel about that.
Do you like working alone? Then be a screenwriter.
Do you like babysitting? Then be a director.
Expressing your ideas is limited in screenwriting; you create the screenplay and that’s it. You’re done. Take your check and move on to the next project.
Expressing your ideas as a director is different; you have an envelope you can work within (it’s called “budget”) to bring the story the screenwriter wrote to life.
If you want to do both – which isn’t unheard of – you can. You just get to start by doing independent films; large studios will NOT take a chance on risking any money on an untried writer who also wants to direct.
I chose screenwriting because I like the solitary calling of the work, the building of the story, and fitting all of the characters and drama into the tiny little puzzle box you’ve got to work with.
Directing is harder; you’ve got ot be far more organized, you’ve got to work under pressure constantly, and you have to deliver a product. You’ll only ever be as good as your worst project.
you need to understand fully what those two does in the film industry.
Can you handle a heavy and stressful workload? Imagine college and multiply it 5 times – become a director if this is the kind of person you are.
The Director is the overall manager of the film – the look, the feel, the color, the edit sometimes, and even how the special effects looks like. Don’t forget how the actors move into the shot, how the camera moves in the scene, and also edit the script to fit the bill. Sometimes also, the director needs to find producers to fund the production.
A scriptwriter.. you write the script and your job ends there.
